Moody Air Force Base Nanofiltration Treatment Plant
Lowndes County, Georgia

One of the most up-to-date water treatment plants in the nation and Georgia's first nanofiltration system, the 1,050 gallon per minute treatment facility removes potentially harmful pollutants from the water supply. The project was necessary for the Air Force Base to meet new U.S. EPA guidelines promulgated in the Disinfectants/ Disinfection By-Product Rule (D/DBPR) concerning trihalomethane (THM) production in the water system. Thomas & Hutton tested several water treatment options by setting up a pilot system at Moody. In addition to nanofiltration, the piloted systems included conventional filtration, pressured filtration, granular activated carbon (GAC), ozone, chlorine oxide, and chloramination. GAC and nanofiltration were found to meet the water quality goals, but nanofiltration was a more cost-effective system in the life cycle analysis.

The project designed was "fast-tracked" to meet U.S. Air Force funding schedules. Design and permitting had to be completed in a 4 1/2 month window.
