Colleton River Plantation is a 750-acre planned community located on the Colleton River in Bluffton, South Carolina. The project boasts a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course and tennis facilities designed by Stan Smith. Roadway designs in Colleton River Plantation required special attention to detail. The road system was designed to blend seamlessly with the pristine condition of the natural surroundings. Colleton River Boulevard is the main connector road in the project. The road is in excess of 4 miles in length and is located within a 100’ wide access corridor terminating at SC Highway 278.
Due to the relatively straight alignment of the road, special effort was made to introduce curvature to the alignment as a means of controlling operating speeds and ensure safety. Additionally, environmentally sensitive issues such as wetlands and an adjacent wildlife refuge were considered in the design. As a means of further considering the safety and security of the residents of Colleton River Plantation, several vehicular grade separations were constructed to avoid at-grade conflict points.
Thomas & Hutton designed over 5 miles of roads and water and sewer services to serve 103 residential lots. A vehicular tunnel design of aluminized steel and 2 aluminum golf cart tunnels were included in the road design. Thomas & Hutton also provided the drainage system design for the Jack Nicklaus Golf Course and an additional nine hole, par 3 golf course for the development. This commitment to ecologically sound design principles will continue with the planning of a new clubhouse for the development and additional home sites. Colleton River is an extraordinary blending of a dynamic residential area in a serene, natural paradise.
